The exhibition will be on view from September 7 through October 14, 2017. The gallery will be hosting an opening reception for the artist on Thursday, September 7 from 6-8 pm. This will be Brown’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.
This exhibition will display a series of work in which Brown utilizes the post-industrial landscape of her surroundings as the starting point for narrative, where a female protagonist, her dog, and various avian companions move through urban to pastoral settings.
Thick daubs of paint applied with a palette knife are punctuated by linear passages and off-register color patches, offering a fractured, brooding landscape that navigates an exotic and unfamiliar world. Seen as a whole, Runaways channels feelings of abjection, strength, freedom, and empowerment.
Deborah Brown lives in New York and works in Bushwick, where she began Storefront TenEyck, one of the first artist-run galleries in the neighborhood. She has an MFA from Indiana University and a BA from Yale University. Recent exhibitions include ICA Maine College of Art, Lesley Heller Workspace, NY; Mike Weiss Gallery, NY; Life on Mars, Brooklyn, NY; BravinLee programs, Brooklyn, NY; and Ober Gallery, Kent, CT.
