In an enchanting blend of artistic expression, Ping Zheng’s vibrant oil stick landscapes complement the poetic sculptures and drawings of Niagara Falls by Katy Schimert. The two together create a harmonious relation where bold lines and bright colors evoke the sublime beauty of cascading rivers, celestial sunsets, and moonlit horizons. The works are embodied with the ethereal presence of nature’s majestic wonders and lyrical possibilities.

The combined effect between the two artists becomes even more captivating as we delve into the realm of illusion and movement. Schimert’s expert handling of clay, adorned with vertical ridges and her skillful application of glazes, imbues the sculptures with the mesmerizing illusion of falling water. These sculptures, evoking the cascading energy of Niagara Falls, form a striking contrast to Zheng’s dynamic oil stick landscapes.

Katy Schimert lives and works in New York. She is a 2020 recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship and a recent resident at The Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans, LA.

The artist was featured in Making Knowing: Craft in Art, 1950-2019 at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY and participated in Moon Shot at the Moody Center For the Arts at Rice University, Houston, TX. She has exhibited extensively, with solo exhibitions at Derek Eller, New York, David Zwirner, New York, University Museum of Contemporary Art at University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and The Renaissance Society, Chicago, among others. Schimert serves as Professor and Department Head of Ceramics at Rhode Island School of Design.

Ping Zheng lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She received an MFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2016 and a BFA in painting from the University College of London, Slade School of Fine Art in 2014.

Her works are included in the collections of JP Morgan Chase Bank, Fidelity Investments Corporate Art Collection, and the Cleveland Clinic Art Program. Zheng’s exhibitions have been reviewed by Wendy Vogel in Artforum and Johanna Fateman in The New Yorker, while her 2019 exhibition catalogue includes an essay by Barbara Pollack. Zheng’s works on paper in oil stick feature elements of landscape and cosmology, bold lines, and geometric shapes that suggest portions of the human form. She draws upon her childhood experiences in nature and her boundless, energetic spirit, while working from her studio in the city. She is represented by Kristen Lorello in New York City and McClain Gallery in Houston, Texas.
