Since the early 2000’s, Courtney Puckett has used discarded objects and reclaimed fabrics as her sculptural material – creating works that are both tactile and resonant, meticulously fabricated yet organic in their form. Using materials like found furniture, household objects, and reclaimed textiles, her work explores the histories of feminine craft and labor and more recently, divination tools and practices. Puckett’s style combines the material tactility of modernist sculpture with a deeply personal aesthetic tradition of everyday object-making passed down through generations of women in her family.
For the last decade, Puckett’s Character series – large scale sculptures serving as metaphors for surrogate bodies with names that suggest occupational or social roles such as The Gardener, and The Caretaker, have explored the understanding of our human footprint over time through their foundation of found objects and textiles, materials that life constantly puts in our way.
In addition to her sculpture practice, The Elementals will also showcase Puckett’s collages and a recent series of short animations. These animations trade physical tactility for the possibility of the digital space to offer each piece a temporary world — a place where the “Characters” can reveal what they do, why they exist, and where they might go next.
